1st Grade - 5th Grade

Foundations 1 - 2

Fundations is a highly effective and research-based phonics curriculum designed to build a strong foundation in reading, spelling, and handwriting for students in 1st through 2nd grade. Fundations uses a multisensory approach, meaning children learn by seeing, hearing, touching, and moving, making the learning process engaging and accessible for all.

Fundations systematically teaches the essential building blocks of literacy. This includes:

  • Phonological and Phonemic Awareness: This helps children recognize and manipulate the sounds in spoken language, a crucial pre-reading skill.

  • Phonics and Word Study: Students learn the relationships between letters and sounds (e.g., "b" makes the /b/ sound) and how to blend these sounds to read words. They also learn common spelling patterns and "trick words" (words that don't follow typical rules).

  • Handwriting: Correct letter formation is taught explicitly, which supports both reading and spelling.

  • Spelling: Children learn to apply phonetic rules to spell words accurately.

  • Fluency: Through consistent practice, students develop the ability to read smoothly and with expression.

Amplify CKLA

Our school has adopted Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA), a comprehensive literacy curriculum that is deeply rooted in the "Science of Reading." For parents, it's helpful to understand that Amplify CKLA works on two equally important tracks: building foundational reading skills and developing rich background knowledge.

Everyday Math

Everyday Mathematics is a comprehensive K-5 math curriculum developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project, designed to foster a deep and lasting understanding of mathematical concepts. Unlike traditional approaches that often emphasize rote memorization, Everyday Mathematics connects math to real-world situations, making learning more meaningful and engaging for students.

Everyday Mathematics uses a "spiral" approach, meaning concepts are introduced, revisited, and expanded upon over time, allowing for a gradual mastery of skills and building on prior knowledge. Key features of the curriculum include:

  • Real-Life Problem Solving: Students apply mathematical concepts to relevant, everyday situations, fostering a practical understanding of how math works in the world.

  • Balanced Instruction: Lessons incorporate a mix of whole-group teaching, small-group activities, partner work, and individual practice, catering to diverse learning styles.

  • Multiple Strategies: Children are encouraged to explore and explain various methods for solving problems, promoting flexible thinking and a deeper conceptual understanding, rather than just memorizing one algorithm.

  • Ongoing Practice through Games: Math games are an integral part of the curriculum, providing enjoyable and effective ways for students to practice and reinforce basic facts and skills.

  • Emphasis on Communication: Students regularly discuss and explain their mathematical thinking, helping them clarify their understanding and learn from their peers.

Faith-Based Learning

The kindergarten to 5th-grade religion curriculum integrates Finding God, which focuses on nurturing children's spiritual growth through engaging activities and reflective exercises. Safe and Sacred ensures that students learn about personal safety and respect within a faith-based context, fostering a secure environment for spiritual development. Additionally, the Dynamic Catholic program introduces students to vibrant Catholic teachings, encouraging them to live out their faith with joy and enthusiasm.
